The River 04:47
The devil came to play today and cackled at the sun Though a risky bet he played he knew that he had won His hunger grew for more than this a pity vote not cast The child’s pain has sealed his kiss and the water’s flowing fast Drink from the river boy Smell the fresh green grass Kiss the sky and pray to God That your time won’t pass You’ll need something beautiful a miracle at hand Fortune setting with the sun Wishing you will stand The angel sits and stops to think of how this came to be She contemplates taking a drink from the water that she sees But the water of the river flows To heaven and to hell So if you want to quench your thirst You must find the well Drink from the river boy Smell the fresh green grass Kiss and the sky and pray to God That your time won’t pass You’ll need something beautiful a miracle at hand Fortune setting with the sun Wishing you will stand

Left on my own What did I do wrong? To deserve this shame I hear a voice I’m left with no choice To observe their games Outside there lies a life I dare not fantasise Yet I ask why/I’ve not learnt Why I’m left to cry/Why I’m left to yearn For what I’ll never have My body creeks I follow their shrieks Past my wooden walls I see them there They’re without a care Stood straight and tall Outside I feel the life I would not dare describe I might have known That here on my own My days would fill with the empty My questions sink And all I do is blink At the clouded moon The river calls The devil he crawls But I have attuned Outside I know there’s life Beyond my sunken eyes My body’s bent And all my time is spent Being teased with my freedom

The Baptism 05:20
On my daily muse I start to lose All my faith in you My greatest fears Consume me like a storm that never clears My trust in you shakes Do I keep my faith? I ask you what it takes Now my wings lay broken Whispered words unspoken God bless the man with the losing hand Belief in you withers away He waits for a song to sing again But singing won’t fix his faith Baptise my mind God save me I feel I’m falling away God bless the man with the losing hand Belief in you withers away He wants a song to sing again Eyes that don’t see Ears that don’t hear It’s life that he’s craving A life that’s worth saving God bless the man with the losing hand Belief in you withers away He waits a song to sing again Eyes that don’t see Ears that don’t hear It’s life that he’s craving A life that’s worth saving

The Downpour 05:06
Again I pray for rain But a downpour wouldn't numb the pain I wish that I could see Beyond a fate so crippling I wish that I could feel You helped me stand alone Drips of strength in brittle bones The sparkle in your eye Tossed aside by turning tides of waters I have fantasised Again I pray for rain But a downpour wouldn't numb the pain I wish that I could see Beyond a fate so crippling I wish that I could feel Ooh na na…

about

The EP is broadly speaking a concept release, centred on the Seamus Heaney poem ‘Bye Child’ and the story of Kevin Halfpenny, one of the most bizarre cases of child cruelty ever recorded. This is mirrored in the EP title and cover art (designed by Billie Webster), with broken backbones becoming broken wings. The title itself also references Emily Dickinson’s “’Hope’ is the thing with feathers” poem, which itself is a call-back to the music found within:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
